The detection of monkeypox virus in five people in St. Petersburg, Russia, has once again brought concerns about the disease to the forefront.

The Republican Center for Hygiene and Epidemiology of the Ministry of Health informed Modern.az that no cases of monkeypox (mpox) virus infection have been recorded in the country during 2026.

It was stated that the epidemiological situation regarding infectious diseases in Azerbaijan is currently stable and under full control.

Control measures are being continued at border crossing points to prevent the entry of monkeypox into the country. At the same time, awareness-raising activities are being carried out among medical workers, and preventive recommendations are given to the public.

Citizens are advised to observe personal hygiene rules, especially to pay close attention to their health during foreign trips.

The Center noted that there is currently no real epidemiological threat related to monkeypox in Azerbaijan.

It should be recalled that the condition of the five patients infected in Russia was reported to be stable, and the disease was mild to moderate. Monkeypox (mpox) virus is an infectious disease that is mainly spread through close physical contact. The main symptoms of the disease include fever, headache and muscle aches, swollen lymph nodes, and skin rashes.
