The European Union (EU) is considering the candidacies of former German Chancellor Angela Merkel, Finnish President Alexander Stubb, and former Italian Prime Minister Mario Draghi for possible talks with Russia.

Modern.az reports that “Politico” published this information, citing three diplomatic sources.

According to the information, the EU's High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, Kaja Kallas, refused the role of mediator in the talks. Sources said that Kallas's tough and open stance against Russia could lead to a negative reaction from the Kremlin, especially Russian President Vladimir Putin, to her candidacy.

“Politico” writes that the European Union believes that a representative for possible talks should both gain the support of EU countries and be met with trust by the Kremlin. For this reason, Brussels is prioritizing the candidacies of more balanced and experienced politicians in relations with Russia.
