French Prime Minister Sébastien Lecornu has accused the far-left movement of intending to organize large-scale riots in the country before the presidential elections.
Modern.az reports that Lecornu stated that the special services had informed the government about this.
“The existence of a far-left movement that wants to cause riots, and even more serious events, in the country before the presidential elections has already been proven. This network can mobilize to dispute the timing of the elections, or even their holding at all,” the Prime Minister said.
Lecornu announced that large-scale investigative measures have been launched in connection with the events. According to him, approximately 200 investigators from the police prefecture in the Paris region alone will examine photo and video materials.
The Prime Minister stated that some of those involved in the violence did not hide their faces, which facilitated their identification.
“We cannot allow an aggressive minority to impose its agenda of violence and prevent the elections from taking place. We will declare a state of emergency if we deem it necessary,” he emphasized.
Lecornu said that the situation in some urban areas is tense and announced that he had instructed prefects to impose curfews in certain areas at night. He noted that the safety of candidates, including their personal protection, is also on the agenda.
According to the Prime Minister, two-thirds of those detained are adults, and almost all of them are men. Among them are individuals who have previously come to the attention of the police.
Lecornu stated that approximately 80 percent of the detentions led to court proceedings and said that legal measures would help stabilize the situation.
