German Chancellor Friedrich Mertz stated that Europe does not adequately assess the threat emanating from Russia.
Modern.az reports that Mertz said in an interview with Bloomberg agency that Russian President Vladimir Putin's goals are not limited to Ukraine.
According to the Chancellor's assessment, Moscow is trying to disrupt the political order on the European continent.
This statement was made against the background of the German authorities accusing Russia of an attempted drone attack on Leipzig airport in August.
Mertz stated that he will continue financial support to Ukraine and emphasized that Europe should strengthen its defense within the framework of NATO.
According to him, in his regular discussions with US President Donald Trump, he explains that the stability of European countries is also in the interests of the US.
Bloomberg assessed the Chancellor's position as an attempt to prepare the continent for more independent action, while maintaining the US presence in Europe.
