Taiwanese authorities have accused China of conducting a large-scale disinformation campaign aimed at interfering in local elections to be held in November.
Modern.az reports that “Reuters” agency disseminated information citing a report by Taiwan's National Security Bureau.
According to the report, in the first nine months of 2026, more than 2.5 million false or controversial information materials, reported to be of Chinese origin, were discovered.
This figure is approximately 48 percent higher compared to the same period last year.
Taiwan's special services believe that the campaign uses AI-generated videos, fake social media accounts, and coordinated information networks.
It was stated that the disseminated materials mainly concern energy security, food supply, defense policy, and candidates participating in the elections.
According to the National Security Bureau, the average daily number of cyberattacks against Taiwan's state institutions has also reached 2.58 million.
Beijing, however, has previously rejected accusations of interfering in elections and spreading disinformation in Taiwan.
