NATO has decided to strengthen its military presence and security measures in the Black Sea region amid an increase in attacks against merchant ships.
Modern.az reports that Turkey's Anadolu Agency and "Reuters" have released information about this.
It was stated that the North Atlantic Council, NATO's main decision-making p, discussed the security situation in the Black Sea in Brussels.
As a result of the meeting, additional maritime patrol aircraft, radar systems, unmanned aerial vehicles, intelligence and research teams will be sent to the region.
NATO spokeswoman Allison Hart said that the alliance has already strengthened its defense capabilities on the eastern flank, including its ability to combat unmanned aerial vehicles.
According to her, NATO is determined to ensure the security of member countries and to act jointly against possible threats.
The decision was made after an increase in attacks against merchant ships near the coasts of Bulgaria and Romania in recent days.
On October 13, two ships were attacked by unmanned aerial vehicles off the coast of Bulgaria. One of the ships sank.
Later, two merchant ships sailing under the flags of San Marino and the Comoros were attacked near the coast of Romania.
Of the 12 crew members on the San Marino-flagged ship, 5 were rescued and 7 are missing.
Although Russia is suspected of being involved in the attacks, NATO has not officially accused any country of the incidents.
