Ankara does not strongly oppose the project to build a high-voltage underwater power transmission line ("Great Sea Interconnector") that will connect the energy systems of Greece's Crete island and Greek Cyprus. This issue was discussed during the meeting between Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan and Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis in New York. The Turkish side considers this initiative "valuable."

Modern.az reports with reference to AZERTAC that Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan said this in an interview with the Greek newspaper "Ta Nea."

At the same time, the minister noted that instead of spending more than 2 billion euros from European funds on laying an underwater high-voltage power line more than two thousand kilometers long, it is possible to purchase electricity from Turkey, which is only 70 miles from Cyprus.

"Cypriots can get fresh water, electricity and gas from Turkey," the minister emphasized.

H. Fidan also called on Athens to abandon attempts to change the existing status quo in the region, stating that such attempts "could lead to bigger problems."
