A giant floating island covered with trees, not found on maps, has been discovered in British Columbia, Canada.
Modern.az reports with reference to foreign media that the mysterious object was spotted by a local resident in the Williston Reservoir, near the city of Mackenzie.
In a video shared by local resident Rocky Avery, a piece of land covered with trees is seen floating on the water. According to the information, when the island was discovered, the depth of the water under it was approximately 60 meters.
Initially, those who saw the incident thought that the images were created with artificial intelligence, but a satellite image taken on July 21 confirmed that the island really exists. On August 5, the object disappeared from satellite images.
According to experts' calculations, the island was approximately 140 meters long and 70 meters wide.
How it formed is still not precisely known. According to one hypothesis, plants and trees took root among the tree debris that had accumulated on the coastal area for a long time. As a result of the water level in the reservoir reaching its highest level in the last 14 years this summer, that part may have broken off from the shore and fallen into the water.
However, John Clague, an employee of the Geological Survey of Canada, expressed doubt about this version and stated that he had not encountered an event of such scale before.
On August 31, the mysterious island was discovered again. This time, it was recorded in the area where the Ospika River flows into the reservoir, approximately 30 kilometers from where it was first seen.
Bob Gammer, a representative of BC Hydro, advised not to approach the island. According to him, the floating object is unstable and can break apart at any time.
