US President Donald Trump said he made the decision to continue the war with Iran himself.
Modern.az reports that Trump stated this in an interview with “Time” magazine.
When asked why the process was prolonged, despite the fact that the US war against Iran was initially said to last 4-8 weeks, Trump said: “I could have stopped, but I wanted to go further.”
According to him, he decided to continue the operation after the first strikes on Iran's nuclear facilities. Trump stated that his goal was to prevent Iran from restoring its capabilities in the future.
The US President claimed that his country destroyed Iran's nuclear capabilities, naval and air forces, as well as radar systems. He also stated that the Iranian economy is in a difficult situation.
Trump noted that his goal is not just to stop the fighting, but to reach a “real agreement.” According to him, this is why the US did not accept Iran's latest proposal for a ceasefire and the opening of the Strait of Hormuz. Trump stated that he did not consider this proposal sufficient.
The US President also commented on his recent statement that he “could destroy” Iran in the near future, saying, “Yes, I would. It's possible.”
When asked to clarify whether he was referring to the government of the Islamic Republic of Iran or all of Iran, Trump did not give a direct answer. The US President claimed that the Iranian authorities have killed tens of thousands of protesters in recent months.
Trump also did not rule out the possibility of intensifying bombardments against Iran after the midterm elections in the US. When asked if this option was being considered, he replied, “It's possible.”
He stated that the US has large stockpiles of weapons and that the country has been actively increasing their number over the past six months.
“We have a lot of weapons. We have been stockpiling for the last six months,” Trump said.
