The US Department of Defense has announced the date for the first execution by firing squad of a convicted American soldier since World War II.

Modern.az reports that Nidal Malik Hasan, who killed 13 people at a military base in Texas in 2009, will be executed on December 3.

A memorandum signed by Adam Telle, the acting Secretary of the US Army, stated that the execution will take place on Thursday, December 3, 2026, at 1:00 PM local time at Fort Hood military base in Texas.

According to the official, the date was set as part of the implementation of US President Donald Trump's decision regarding Nidal Malik Hasan, who was found guilty in the 2009 Fort Hood military base attack.

Nidal Hasan, a major in the medical service and a military psychiatrist, entered a deployment readiness center at Fort Hood military base in Texas on November 5, 2009. He shouted “Allahu Akbar!” and opened fire with a pistol on unarmed soldiers.

The attack resulted in 13 deaths and 32 injuries. Hasan was seriously wounded by police officers who arrived at the scene, became paralyzed from the waist down, and was apprehended. The investigation linked his motive to radical Islamist ideology.

The last execution by firing squad in the US Armed Forces took place in November 1945. At that time, a private soldier was executed after being found guilty of desertion.
