New statistics have been released on the number of prisoners per 100,000 people in various countries around the world.
Modern.az reports that, according to the ranking, El Salvador leads the list by a large margin. In this country, there are 1659 prisoners per 100,000 people.
In the post-Soviet space, one of the highest indicators belongs to Turkmenistan. The country ranks 4th in the world with an indicator of 576 prisoners.
In the ranking, Belarus is 24th with an indicator of 345, Russia is 35th with an indicator of 300, and Georgia is 41st with an indicator of 285.
Azerbaijan is 50th on the list with an indicator of 264 prisoners. Moldova is 54th with an indicator of 255.
Among Central Asian countries, Kazakhstan is 103rd with an indicator of 163, Tajikistan is 112th with an indicator of 145, and Kyrgyzstan is 145th with an indicator of 112.
Armenia was one of the countries at the bottom of the list. Armenia, with 83 prisoners per 100,000 people, ranked 167th and was shown as the country with the lowest indicator among the CIS countries presented.
Experts note that the number of prisoners is directly related to countries' criminal policy, judicial system, penal legislation, and the activities of law enforcement agencies.
