Reports have emerged about an assassination attempt on Major General Nikolay Varpakhovich of the Russian Aerospace Forces near Engels, Saratov Oblast, Russia.

According to the pro-Kremlin Telegram channel “Baza,” in the morning, an unknown person on a motorcycle approached the private house where the serviceman lived in the village of “Probuzhdeniye” on the outskirts of Engels.
According to the information, the person wearing a motorcycle helmet opened fire as soon as he saw the general.
“The serviceman sustained two gunshot wounds. His driver also suffered a gunshot wound,” the channel wrote.
“Baza” reported that the general was hospitalized in serious condition.
The Russian Telegram channel “Dosye shpiona” claimed that the person targeted in the assassination attempt was Major General Nikolay Nikolayevich Varpakhovich, commander of the 22nd Heavy Bomber Aviation Division of the Long-Range Aviation of the Russian Aerospace Forces.
According to the channel, the general sustained two gunshot wounds to the head and abdomen and is currently in critical condition. The search for the shooter is reportedly ongoing.
It is noted that the Security Service of Ukraine (SBU) and the Prosecutor General's Office of Ukraine announced a заочное (in absentia) suspicion against Varpakhovich on August 31. The reason for this was the missile strike on the “Okhmatdet” children's hospital in Kyiv in July 2024.
According to the Ukrainian investigation, long-range aviation units under Varpakhovich's command participated in the launch of a “Kh-101” cruise missile at the hospital. The missile was reportedly launched from a “Tu-95MS” bomber-missile carrier.

In early August, reports emerged of an explosion in one of Moscow's elite restaurants. Russian and Ukrainian media reported that the incident could have been a possible assassination attempt against the Commander-in-Chief of the Russian Aerospace Forces, Alexander Chayko.
Chayko survived the explosion, but there were reports that his family members were killed and injured.
