The Hungarian parliament has revoked the parliamentary immunity of Prime Minister Peter Magyar, who is accused of stealing a mobile phone.
Modern.az reports that the deputies overwhelmingly supported the prosecutor's submission to lift the head of government's immunity. This has created a legal opportunity to initiate criminal proceedings against Peter Magyar.
"139 people voted in favor of this decision. There were no votes against or abstentions," said Parliament Speaker Agnes Forsthoffer during an extraordinary session broadcast on M1 TV.
The prosecutor's submission was supported by deputies from the ruling "Tisza" party and the ultra-conservative "Our Homeland" party.
The opposition "FIDES - Hungarian Civic Alliance" and Christian-Democrat factions did not attend the session. They boycotted the session in protest, as the issue of revoking the immunity of two deputies who were former ministers in Viktor Orban's government was also considered at that session.
Peter Magyar is both the Prime Minister and a Member of Parliament. His "Tisza" party holds more than two-thirds of the seats in parliament.
Peter Magyar himself requested the revocation of his parliamentary immunity. He stated that he is ready to cooperate with the investigation and has nothing to fear.
The incident occurred in June 2024. At that time, Magyar took the mobile phone from a person who was filming him in a nightclub and threw it into the Danube River.
Regarding the incident, Peter Magyar stated that representatives of the former government tried to organize a provocation against him.
