Former commander arrested after 12 soldiers die in the Caspian Sea

Kanat Niyazbekov, the former commander-in-chief of the Kazakhstan Naval Forces, has been arrested in connection with the death of servicemen during exercises in the Caspian Sea.

Modern.az reports that, according to the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Kazakhstan, Niyazbekov is suspected of negligent attitude towards service.

The administration of Mangistau region announced that the number of servicemen killed in the incident has reached 12. The search for two more servicemen continues.

Kazakhstan's President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev signed a decree declaring national mourning in the country in connection with the servicemen who died while performing their official duties.
