Climate change and floods seriously affect people's lives, infrastructure, and economies around the world. This once again reveals the importance of sustainable spatial planning.

Modern.az reports that this was stated by UN Deputy Secretary-General Amina Mohammed at the official closing ceremony of the 13th session of the World Urban Forum (WUF13) held in Baku.

According to her, every investment should be aimed at long-term sustainability and disaster preparedness:

“Sustainable urbanization and adequate housing are essential conditions for achieving the 2030 agenda. Housing is not only a place of residence, but also a matter of clean water, sanitation, energy, security, accessibility, and social inclusivity.”

The UN official emphasized that the forum held in Baku demonstrated the importance of international cooperation and solidarity.

“Local and regional governments, city leaders, civil society, the private sector, youth, and women's groups play a key role in building more sustainable cities of the future.”

She added that more than 50,000 participants from over 175 countries gathered in Baku within the framework of WUF13.

“The results obtained in Baku create a strong basis for the mid-term review of the New Urban Agenda to be held in New York in July. The next decade cannot be like the previous one. More ambition, finance, inclusivity, action, and sustainability are needed,” she said.
