The Khojaly Genocide Memorial serves to preserve national memory. These thoughts were expressed by Elchin Yusubov, the special representative of the President of the Republic of Azerbaijan in Khankendi city, Aghdara and Khojaly districts, during a meeting with foreign diplomats visiting the complex.
According to information provided to Modern.az by the public relations department of the Restoration, Construction and Management Service in Khankendi city, Aghdara and Khojaly districts, guests were given detailed information about the memorial complex. E. Yusubov stated that the Khojaly Genocide Memorial Complex was established to immortalize the memory of the victims of the Khojaly tragedy, convey historical truths to future generations, and preserve national memory, based on the Decree signed by President Ilham Aliyev in February 2025.
It was noted that the memorial project was implemented based on a concept developed by the Heydar Aliyev Foundation. The monolithic structure surrounding the complex on four sides is designed in the form of symbolic hands trying to protect the residents of Khojaly from the genocide.
The memorial consists of four sections. In the first two sections, exhibition halls dedicated to the memory of the victims of the Khojaly genocide have been created. Visitors are greeted by an installation called “The Face of the Tragedy”. The installation, authored by Rashad Alakbarov and Azer Rustamov, artistically depicts the civilians who died and the families destroyed during the tragedy that occurred on the night of February 25-26, 1992.
The flying pigeon models placed on the ceiling of the memorial are presented as a symbol of respect for the memory of the victims of the Khojaly tragedy and a wish for peace.
