Autumn of 1990... The pillars of the Soviet empire were shaking, and Baku was experiencing the most tense and decisive days in its history. In the streets of the city, which was at a critical turning point in history, there was political tension, and in the hearts of people, there was both anxiety and great hope for the future. The restoration of Azerbaijan's independence was already being discussed, and in some places, slogans of "Freedom!" were heard. At such a complex time, Semra Özal, the wife of the then President of Turkey, Turgut Özal, came to Baku as a guest.
This photo, presented by Modern.az on its "The history of a photo" rubric, is from the archive of "Anadolu" Agency.
Time: June 23, 1990... Place: Baku city...
Semra Özal, the wife of Turkish President Turgut Özal, who visited Azerbaijan for the first time, held various meetings in Baku. She came to the Azerbaijani capital as the head of the Turkish Women's Empowerment and Promotion Foundation. The visit took place at the invitation of the Azerbaijan Women's Society.
This photo reflects one of the memorable moments of that visit.
Within the framework of the visit, Semra Özal also met with Sheikhulislam Allahshukur Pashazade, the chairman of the Caucasus Muslims Office.
In the photo: from left to right - Allahshukur Pashazade, Semra Özal, and Adila Mutallibova, the wife of Azerbaijani President Ayaz Mutallibov.
In those years, every warm gesture from Turkey evoked special feelings in Azerbaijan and was received like a brotherly breath. This also meant the message "we are with you!". For Azerbaijan, which had not yet officially gained its independence, the attention of brotherly Turkey remained as a beacon of hope in the memory of the people.
Semra Özal's meeting with the leadership of the Caucasus Muslims Office was also of particular importance. Because at that time, the concepts of religion, national identity, and statehood were being re-formed.
There are striking points in the photo: the political atmosphere of an era, diplomatic gestures, spiritual closeness...
Although it is a photo taken within the framework of official protocol, behind the felt composure on the faces lies a great historical tension. Because Baku of that year was no longer the same Baku. The country was entering a new era.
One of the striking points in the photo is the clear perception of national-spiritual nuances. Head coverings, clothing style, people's gazes - all these reflect the social spirit characteristic of the early 90s.
Semra Özal's meeting with Sheikhulislam Allahshukur Pashazade was not accidental. At that time, religious figures were also considered a spiritual support for society.
The gazes in the background of the frame are also interesting. Everyone is looking at the same point, but everyone's thoughts are different. Because there was an unknown future ahead. And Azerbaijan was entering the most fateful years of its history.
