Local and regional governments are not only executive bodies, but also political actors.
Modern.az reports that Rohey Malick Lowe, Mayor of Banjul, Gambia, and President of REFELA Africa, stated this at the official closing ceremony of the 13th session of the UN World Urban Forum (WUF13) held in Baku.
She thanked the Azerbaijani government and the city of Baku for the warm welcome.
“The right to housing is a human right, and the provision of decent housing is not possible without accessible, quality, and sustainable services for all.”
The representative also added that local and regional governments need empowerment, funding, and political recognition:
“We are not just implementers of decisions, but we must also participate in shaping global commitments. This issue is not only about policy, but also about trust, democracy, and the future of multilateralism,” she noted.
