The Caspian Sea and its ecosystem are considered a unique natural system. The protection and restoration of fish stocks here is one of the main activities of the Fisheries Research Center, which operates under the Ministry of Agriculture.
Modern.az reports that Jeyhun Aliyev, director of the Fisheries and Aquaculture Center, stated this in an interview with journalists at an event held in connection with International Biodiversity Day.
He noted that currently sturgeon and Caspian salmon are among the endangered species:
“The protection and restoration of these species is an important responsibility for both present and future generations. For this purpose, the next fish release campaign has been launched in the Caspian Sea.
Within the framework of the campaign, sturgeon weighing between 300-500 grams, as well as Caspian salmon, are released into the Caspian shores. During the season, a total of more than 500 thousand sturgeon and more than 50 thousand Caspian salmon are planned to be released into natural water bodies.
Only this month, 150 thousand sturgeon are planned to be released into the Caspian Sea. Some of the released fish are samples grown in previous years. In addition, 500 thousand baby fish weighing 3-5 grams, which hatched this year, are planned to be released into the natural environment.
The fish release process is mainly carried out in spring and autumn. In the spring season, 150 thousand, and in the autumn months, 350 thousand sturgeon are targeted to be released,” said J. Aliyev.
Jeyhun Aliyev, director of the Fisheries and Aquaculture Center, added that fish release into the Caspian Sea will continue regularly and measures by state agencies to protect rare species will continue.
