The city of Aghdam, completely destroyed after the occupation, is rapidly reviving today, and thousands of people have already returned to their native lands within the framework of the Great Return Program.
Modern.az reports that these views were expressed by Emin Huseynov, Special Representative of the President of the Republic of Azerbaijan for Aghdam, Fuzuli and Khojavand districts, at the event on “From Urbicide to Revival: Sustainable Reconstruction, Settlement and Development in Aghdam, Fuzuli, Khojavand, Jabrayil, Gubadli and Zangilan” held within the framework of WUF13.
According to him, when Aghdam was liberated from occupation, it looked like the “Hiroshima of the Caucasus” or the “city of ghosts”.
“If it is necessary to show what urbicide looks like, Aghdam is the clearest example of this. When the city was liberated, almost nothing was left here. However, in five years, the face of Aghdam has completely changed. Aghdam is returning to life like a Phoenix bird rising from the ashes and will live longer than the occupiers thought. The Great Return Program is being implemented rapidly. Currently, there are 72 settlements in Aghdam district, 60 in Fuzuli and 83 in Khojavand.
He stated that 11 residential areas have already been created in three districts, 25,000 apartments and 18,864 private houses have been built.
According to the special representative, large-scale infrastructure projects are also being implemented in the region. Thus, 16 automobile roads with a total length of 593.7 kilometers have been put into operation, the Barda-Aghdam railway line has been laid, railway and bus station complexes have been created, and an international airport has been built.
E. Huseynov emphasized that currently 13,700 people live in three districts, including 7,000 in Aghdam and 6,700 in Fuzuli and Khojavand.
“This shows that people are returning to their native lands. They live in new homes, work and become productive members of society.
The restoration process is carried out in accordance with the principles of sustainability. Residential buildings are equipped with solar panels, alternative energy sources are used in street lighting, and centralized heating systems are installed to increase energy efficiency”.
