American specialists arrived in Yerevan for consultations on small modular reactors.

Modern.az reports that the US Embassy in Armenia announced this on social networks.

It was stated that between May 19 and 22, experts from “Sargent and Lundy” company visited Armenia and have already conducted a technical and economic assessment for “replacing the Nuclear Power Plant with advanced American small reactors.”

It was noted that 4 nuclear technologies considered most suitable for application in Armenia were selected, and technical support was aligned with the advanced practices of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA).

In February, US Vice President Vance, who visited Yerevan, stated that Washington would invest 9 billion dollars in Armenia's nuclear energy sector (in tranches of 5 and 4 billion dollars) and would provide small modular reactors “not shared with every country.”

At the same time, Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan has repeatedly stated that Armenia is looking for the most profitable offer for the construction of a new nuclear power plant. Among the options, a Russian reactor is also being considered. Moscow has offered Yerevan a large-capacity NPP project that can meet the republic's energy needs for many years.
