Azerbaijan wants to conclude peace not only with the Armenian government but also with the Armenian people.
Modern.az reports that Hikmet Hajiyev, Assistant to the President of Azerbaijan - Head of the Foreign Policy Affairs Department of the Presidential Administration, said this during his speech at the CAMCA 2026 Regional Forum held in Baku.
Hikmet Hajiyev stated that there is currently de facto peace and security in the region, and its preservation is important in terms of protecting the South Caucasus from the negative impacts of broader regional processes: “The good news is that there is peace and security in the Caucasus. If security and peace were not ensured in the Caucasus, we would probably face completely different situations and realities in our region.”
According to him, Azerbaijan considers achieving peace and strengthening it in a practical plane after resolving the long-standing conflict with Armenia as a priority: “We always said that we won the war, but the more important issue was to win the peace. This is indeed a process that requires great efforts. It required strategic thinking, patience, and the leadership of President Ilham Aliyev.”
Hikmet Hajiyev noted that Azerbaijan does not want to conclude this peace only with the Pashinyan government, Prime Minister Pashinyan: "We want to conclude this peace with the Armenian people. Azerbaijan's goal is to prevent future generations from suffering the consequences of the conflict and to create mechanisms that can turn the peace agenda into long-term regional stability."
