The World Health Organization (WHO) has reported an increased risk of the PJ.2.1 variant of coronavirus spreading globally.
Modern.az reports, citing RIA Novosti, which referred to the WHO representative office in Russia.
It was stated that the variant, first detected in May 2026, has already spread to several continents. As people continue to travel between countries, the risk of its transmission to other countries also increases.
The PJ.2.1 variant is noted to be circulating in Canada, the USA, and Europe.
Currently, there is no published clinical data indicating that this variant causes more severe disease compared to other recent SARS-CoV-2 variants.
