The World Urban Forum is presented not only as a discussion platform, but also as an action platform that brings together a global coalition aimed at advancing transformative urban changes.
Modern.az reports that this was stated by Anaklaudia Rossbach, Executive Director of the UN Human Settlements Program (UN-Habitat), at the official opening press conference of the 13th session of the World Urban Forum (WUF13) held in Baku.
She noted that WUF13 plays the role of a structured space to ensure the transition from dialogue to real implementation.
“Within the framework of the Forum, six high-level dialogues, more than 370 events organized by partners, as well as a global urbanization exhibition covering more than 130 exhibitions are held.
Within the framework of this year's forum, new initiatives - “Practices Hub”, “WUF Academy”, as well as “Business and Innovation Hub” which includes a startup pavilion - have been launched to accelerate learning and expand solutions. These platforms bring together tested innovations, skill development and market-ready solutions in the housing and urban development chain.”
The UN official also emphasized that WUF13 strengthens political participation:
“The ministerial dialogue to be held within this framework will contribute to the formation of the next phase of the New Urban Agenda.
The Forum is transforming into a global implementation platform by combining policy dialogue, innovation, capacity building and political participation.”
She also stated that there is no lack of ways:
“The main problem is the speed and scale of their implementation. Practical solutions are already being applied in various cities around the world to renew informal settlements, expand services and increase climate resilience. At the same time, a large part of the innovations were implemented at the local level with limited resources and in difficult conditions.”
A. Rossbach also noted that empowering cities and communities is important in terms of achieving global goals.
“Given the scale and complexity of modern urbanization challenges, no party can solve these problems alone, and partnerships continue to play a key role.”
According to her, WUF13 is an important stage for the transition from dialogue to implementation, from commitments to concrete actions:
“The Forum will conclude with the “Baku Call to Action” document. This document will reflect a common vision and collective commitment towards accelerating the development of inclusive, sustainable and resilient cities. The need for urgent action is clear. The necessary knowledge exists, and solutions are available. Currently, the main need is to demonstrate joint determination towards making the promise of inclusive, sustainable and resilient cities a reality for everyone,” the UN official concluded.
