The Russia-Ukraine war has become a key factor reshaping the global security architecture, directly impacting the international economic system, energy markets, and geopolitical balances. To a large extent, the world's political agenda, energy routes, defense doctrines, and diplomatic priorities depend on the fate of this war.

This is precisely why most international initiatives aimed at stopping the war remain fruitless. The reason is that the geopolitical interests, spheres of influence, and strategic calculations of major powers clash here. In this clash, peace seems very distant. In such a complex geopolitical configuration, the number of neutral, reliable, and trusted platforms by both sides is extremely limited.

In recent days, the visits of Azerbaijani Foreign Minister Jeyhun Bayramov, first to Moscow and then to Kyiv, attract special attention in this context. From the perspective of diplomatic protocol, this sequence can be evaluated as another demonstration of Azerbaijan's balanced foreign policy course, multi-vector diplomacy, and mediation potential.

Azerbaijan's position is principled and based on international law. Official Baku consistently supports the territorial integrity of Ukraine. At the same time, it maintains strategic partnership relations with Russia. Maintaining a balance between these two lines is considered one of the most difficult and at the same time most professional policies in modern diplomacy.

Azerbaijan's advantage is that it is a state that has itself experienced the severe consequences of war for many years. For thirty years, the country has faced occupation, humanitarian catastrophe, the problem of internally displaced persons, and the selective application of international law. Having restored its territorial integrity in 2020 and in the subsequent period, Azerbaijan, as always, acts as a supporter of lasting peace. This position is an important political capital that further strengthens Baku's international legitimacy.

The increase in Azerbaijan's diplomatic weight in recent years cannot be considered a coincidence. As a result of the pragmatic and multifaceted foreign policy pursued under the leadership of President Ilham Aliyev, Baku has managed to establish reliable relations with various geopolitical centers simultaneously. Today, Azerbaijan is an ally with Turkey, continues strategic dialogue with Russia, is an important partner in the energy security of the European Union, and develops its political and security cooperation with the United States.

One of the important factors increasing Azerbaijan's diplomatic capabilities is its role as an inter-regional geopolitical coordinator. Baku has become one of the main transport and energy hubs of the entire Eurasian space. The development of the Middle Corridor, the intersection of East-West and North-South transport routes, and the logistics chain formed over the Caspian Sea further increase Azerbaijan's geostrategic importance.

In energy diplomacy, Azerbaijan's weight has also significantly increased in recent years. Azerbaijan is considered one of the main partners in diversifying Europe's energy security. Especially against the backdrop of the global energy crisis, the Southern Gas Corridor has become a strategic project for Europe. This factor also expands Baku's political influence.

Azerbaijan also acts as the locomotive of integration processes in the Organization of Turkic States. The deepening of political, economic, and transport ties with Central Asian states, and the expansion of Trans-Caspian cooperation indicate that Baku has become a geopolitical coordination center in the Turkic world.

Another important point that attracts attention is the trust Azerbaijan has gained in the Middle East and global diplomacy. In recent years, the strategic nature of Israel-Azerbaijan relations, and the deepening of bilateral cooperation, against the backdrop of which the issue of the alleged “Armenian genocide” has receded from the agenda in Israeli political circles, is also considered one of the indicators of changing geopolitical realities in the region. At the same time, against the backdrop of maintaining dialogue on the Ankara-Moscow line, and limiting the Washington-Tehran confrontation to diplomatic channels at certain stages, Azerbaijan's ability to work in parallel with various power centers demonstrates its diplomatic flexibility.

For this reason, Baku's potential mediation mission has been discussed more frequently in international expert circles recently. There are even claims that this factor was behind Bayramov's recent official visits.

The fact that Azerbaijan is neither a NATO member nor part of the CSTO space, and at the same time pursues a balanced policy between West and East, makes it a unique diplomatic platform.

The most striking point is that both Moscow and Kyiv attach great importance to political dialogue with Baku, which is not considered a coincidence. Both capitals continue their intensive contacts with the leadership of Azerbaijan. This indicates a high international trust index for Baku. The most valuable resource in diplomacy is trust, and Azerbaijan has managed to build this capital over many years.

In this regard, the possibility of Russian and Ukrainian representatives sitting at the same table in Baku seems more realistic compared to previous years. Such a meeting would be a confirmation of Azerbaijan's transformation into an international mediation institution. This could go down in history as an important result of Baku's geopolitical weight, foreign policy school, and independent diplomatic course.

The reality is that Azerbaijan is not a state that observes events from the sidelines. It has become an actor with increasing influence on regional and global processes, creating a reliable dialogue platform between various power centers. If one of the first real steps towards peace between Russia and Ukraine is taken in Baku, this will mean an increase in the international prestige of the entire region.

From such a scenario, Moscow and Kyiv directly, and indirectly the whole world, will benefit. The greatest victory of diplomacy is to be able to create trust for peace. Today, one of the addresses of trust is undoubtedly Baku.
