In the US midterm elections held on November 3, 2026, Democrats gained a majority in both the Senate and the House of Representatives. This result is considered a voter reaction to President Donald Trump's political course. Economic difficulties, rising prices, the war with Iran, and the administration's foreign policy decisions are cited as key factors influencing the election results.
Democrats will control both chambers of Congress starting January 3, 2027. Naturally, the current situation will create a serious obstacle to Trump's legislative initiatives. It seems that Trump's appointments will also become more difficult. Washington is entering a new phase of institutional confrontation. The struggle between Republicans and Democrats in America is a struggle over which line the state's domestic and foreign policy will be built on. The impact of political changes in America on our region is also a matter of particular attention.
In a statement to Modern.az, former Foreign Minister Tofig Zulfugarov said that changes in US policy will not lead to serious changes in Trump's South Caucasus policy:
"The current changes will manifest themselves more in domestic politics. Accusations against Trump will become more consistent. I do not believe that serious changes will occur in foreign policy. It is possible that Trump's foreign policy initiatives will be blocked. Because Congress must allocate funds for these initiatives. There may be obstacles in this matter. However, Congress rarely implements its own foreign policy initiatives. In this regard, I do not expect serious changes within two years. Currently, the failure of the Republicans is related to Trump. But there are still two years until the next presidential election. It is very difficult to say what will happen in domestic politics right now."
T. Zulfugarov also spoke about the possibility of Trump's impeachment being on the agenda.
"10-12 votes are missing for impeachment. Republicans also need to join this initiative," he said.
The former minister does not expect changes in US policy towards the South Caucasus and Azerbaijan:
"It must be admitted that the South Caucasus and Azerbaijan policy is not currently the number one issue. We must understand that the TRIPP initiative is currently in the interest of many parties. I do not expect any changes in this matter. Simply, Armenians may want to include Russia in this initiative. Russia has actually been there since 1992. Armenians will voice the position of Russians and Iran and say that Russian border guards are the ones who ensure security. The statements currently made by Armenia indicate exactly this. Time will show Azerbaijan's attitude to the issue."
