Discussions on lifting the ban on the deployment of nuclear weapons in Lithuania have caused a strong reaction from Russia.
Modern.az reports that Russian Presidential Press Secretary Dmitry Peskov said that Lithuania's possible decision in this direction would lead to a new stage of tension.
According to him, the deployment of nuclear weapons in Lithuania will create a serious escalation.
“The discussion by the Lithuanian authorities of lifting the ban on the deployment of nuclear weapons on the country's territory will lead to a new stage of tension. This could have been predicted in advance. This will be a very serious step in terms of escalation of tension,” Peskov said.
The Kremlin spokesman said that if any country deploys nuclear weapons on its territory, those weapons are intended to be directed against someone.
“These weapons will not be directed at the West. They will be directed at the East – that is, towards us. If nuclear weapons aimed at our territory are deployed on the territory of that country, then the territory of that country will also become the target of our nuclear weapons,” Peskov emphasized.
