The Tehran Prosecutor's Office has opened a criminal case regarding the 10-kilometer running race held on September 18 in Velayat Park.
Modern.az reports that both women and men participated in the race. The failure of some female participants to observe hijab rules during the race caused widespread discussion on social networks.
The Prosecutor's Office stated that "legal and religious rules were not observed" during the race.
According to the "Fars" agency, the organizers said that the race was held with the permission of the Ministry of Internal Affairs and the Tehran Athletics Federation. The Federation, in turn, announced that written commitments were obtained from the participants that they would comply with Islamic rules and hijab requirements.
Habib Satude-Nejad, head of the Sports Department of Tehran province, stated that permission for the event was granted by the regional security council. Administrative and disciplinary measures will be taken against athletes found to have violated the rules.
