The Strait of Hormuz has been completely closed to shipping.
Modern.az reports that this was stated by Mohsen Rezaei, Secretary of Iran's Supreme National Security Council.
He noted that the Iranian army is firing at American ships trying to pass through the strait, but is not sinking them to avoid harming the environment.
"Iran has decided not to sink American smuggling ships because they carry oil, which would cause environmental damage to the region," Rezaei said.
Earlier, the Financial Times, citing sources, reported that the US has been conducting a secret mine-clearing operation in the Strait of Hormuz for four months. The operation involved special forces divers, robotic boats, and specialized underwater vehicles.
