The final figure for Armenia's losses in the 44-day war was announced yesterday.
Modern.az reports that during debates organized on one of the local televisions, the leader of the ruling "Civil Contract" party, Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan, announced the number of casualties 6 years after the military operations.
"As of today, our total loss is 4273 people."
However, his statement was met with protests from opposition representatives. Arman Tatoyan, former Ombudsman of Armenia and chairman of the "Wings of Unity" party, speaking during the debate, claimed that the government was hiding the real figures from the public. He emphasized that they had concrete evidence and stated: "According to our data, 4991 people died in the war. This figure is not just statistics, we have a name-by-name list of all those who died."
Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan immediately reacted to these accusations from his opposition rival, defending the official statistics.
The ruling party leader's announcement of war losses in this manner was not unequivocally received in the country. The opposition, however, insists that the government is artificially reducing the real scale of military losses because it fears a wave of protests that would arise among the domestic audience. Currently, discussions and tensions continue in the country's public about which figure is correct.
