German Chancellor Friedrich Merz has canceled a phone call with US President Donald Trump scheduled for September 9.
Modern.az reports that “The Guardian” newspaper published information about this.
According to the publication, Merz made this decision after Trump openly welcomed the victory of Germany's far-right “Alternative for Germany” (AfD) party in the elections held in the federal state of Saxony-Anhalt.
A representative of the German government did not answer a question about whether there was a connection between the cancellation of the phone call and Trump's post. However, he stated that the chancellor has repeatedly spoken out against “interference from abroad and comments on internal political processes, including elections.”
Earlier, Trump said that populist forces in Germany were strengthened due to the “terrible migration laws” adopted by the current government. He stated that Germans are “no longer willing to put up with” the current situation.
On September 6, the AfD won the elections to the Saxony-Anhalt parliament. According to “Reuters”, although the party did not get an absolute majority, it collected 44 percent of the votes. This result was considered a serious defeat for the conservatives led by Chancellor Friedrich Merz.
