Italy's Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs supported women wearing long skirts. His opinion on the matter caused a wave of protests in the country.
Modern.az reports that Foreign Minister and leader of the "Forza Italia" party, Antonio Tajani, stated that he would advise his son to marry a girl who wears long skirts. He said that such girls could be better mothers and reliable wives.
Tajani faced harsh criticism and ridicule for this statement. The Catholic Church also reacted sharply to his words.
Member of Parliament Chiara Appendino shared a photo of herself sitting on a bench in a mini-skirt and sarcastically asked if, in this case, she was not considered a good mother or a reliable wife?
"Tajani, am I an unreliable woman?" - the deputy wrote under the photo.
"A woman's reliability is not measured by centimeters of fabric," - Appendino said.
Italy's former Prime Minister and one of the leading representatives of the left-wing camp, Matteo Renzi, also criticized Tajani's views.
"You can't say that a girl who wears a slightly shorter skirt is not a serious person. What is this - the 18th century?" - he said.
After these criticisms, Foreign Minister Tajani was forced to apologize for his words.
"If my words offended anyone, I apologize. But I never intended to hurt women," - the foreign minister said.
