Nithya Raman has won the mayoral election in Los Angeles, USA, and will become the city's first Indian-American mayor. She has surpassed the current mayor, Karen Bass.

Modern.az reports that “Newsweek” magazine has published information about this.

According to the publication, after 76 percent of the expected votes were counted, Nithya Raman received 52.1 percent of the votes, while Karen Bass received 47.9 percent.

Current mayor Karen Bass called her opponent by phone to congratulate her on the victory.

“Los Angeles residents have made their choice. I am committed to ensuring a smooth and seamless transfer of power,” Bass said.

Nithya Raman also thanked her supporters in a video message and acknowledged Karen Bass's work. She promised to ensure the construction of affordable housing, develop public transport, and improve the work of city administration.

45-year-old Nithya Raman was born in Kerala, India. She moved to the USA with her family at the age of six and obtained American citizenship at the age of 22.

She has been representing the fourth district in the Los Angeles City Council since 2020.

It should be noted that Nithya Raman and Karen Bass qualified for the second round of the mayoral election after the primary vote in June.
