Finnish law enforcement agencies have brought official charges against an Azerbaijani citizen, the boatswain of the "Fitburg" vessel.
Modern.az reports, citing the Finnish publication "Yle", that he is accused, along with the ship's captain, a Russian citizen, of damaging underwater telecommunication cables located between Helsinki and Tallinn. The investigation has classified their actions as serious sabotage and disruption of telecommunication networks. According to Finnish law, the accused face up to 10 years in prison.
Initially, 4 crew members were involved as suspects, but as a result of the final investigation, charges were brought against only two people - the captain and the boatswain.
It should be noted that the crew of the "Fitburg" vessel consists of 14 citizens from Russia, Georgia, Azerbaijan, and Kazakhstan.
The ship was detained by Finnish police on December 31 last year. The reason for this was suspicions regarding damage to the Elisa underwater telecommunication cable, which runs along the Gulf of Finland and connects Helsinki and Tallinn.
