In Russia, at least 1 cat is kept in 59 percent of families. This indicator has put the country in the first place in the world in terms of the share of families keeping cats.
Modern.az reports that, according to the research, Romania and Indonesia take the second and third places. In these countries, 48 and 47 percent of families, respectively, have at least 1 cat.
The top ten also included the Philippines (43 percent), Thailand (42 percent), Poland (41 percent), New Zealand (41 percent), USA (37 percent), Latvia (37 percent) and Hungary (35 percent).
The study notes that the widespread distribution of cats in Eastern Europe is related to traditions. In the past, these animals played an important practical role in agriculture, especially in the fight against rodents.
In Southeast Asia, on the other hand, more and more families are said to be starting to keep cats. The authors of the study attribute this to urbanization and the growth of the middle class.
It is interesting that New Zealand was also among the leaders of the list. It is noted that 41 percent of families have at least 1 cat, despite the ongoing discussions about bird protection in the country.
