Konstantin Polezhayev, former mayor of Belgorod, Russia, and former vice-governor of Belgorod region, has died in the war zone in Ukraine.

According to the information, Polezhayev signed a contract with the Russian Ministry of Defense in August 2024. It was reported that he was released from prison in October of the same year while serving in the military.
Konstantin Polezhayev had previously been convicted in a corruption case. The court sentenced him to five years in a strict regime colony and fined him 36 million rubles.
According to the investigation, the former official was found guilty of illegal financial transactions and corruption crimes related to budget funds. The case also included episodes related to the Belgorod Region Housing and Communal Services Reform Fund and the Environmental Safety Center.
According to other sources, Polezhayev was sentenced to five years in prison in 2024 for a bribery case and pleaded guilty in court to receiving bribes in the form of two cars.
Polezhayev was the mayor of Belgorod from 2015-2019, and then served in a leadership position in the government of the Belgorod region.
He is reported to have died at the age of 53.
