Ahead of the midterm elections in the US, Democrats are leading Republicans by 7 percentage points in the race for control of Congress. At the same time, the number of people who disapprove of President Donald Trump's performance has reached a record high of 60 percent. The majority of Americans want the country's political course to be changed.
Modern.az reports that this was stated in the results of the NBC News poll conducted on October 28-30.
52 percent of registered voters participating in the poll want Democrats to control Congress, while 45 percent want Republicans. Among independent voters, the Democrats' advantage is 21 percentage points.
Dissatisfaction with the economic situation may be one of the main determining factors of the elections. Approximately three-quarters of respondents are dissatisfied with the state of the country's economy. 51 percent do not consider their financial situation satisfactory.
For the first time in NBC News polls conducted over the past 30 years, the share of those dissatisfied with their personal financial situation has exceeded the indicator of those who are satisfied.
7 out of every 10 respondents believe that the US is developing in the wrong direction. 64 percent of those who participated in the poll stated that Donald Trump did not meet their expectations. This indicator also includes approximately one-third of the voters who voted for the president.
The share of those who approved of Trump's activities was 40 percent.
However, the Democrats' lead in the election race does not mean an increase in their popularity. 29 percent of respondents said they had a positive attitude towards the Democratic Party, and 38 percent towards the Republican Party.
In addition, Republicans maintain their positions in the constituencies and states where Trump won in 2024.
The poll also showed that Americans' interest in the upcoming elections is high. 70 percent of respondents rated their interest in the elections with 9 or 10 points on a 10-point scale.
Among voters who are more interested in the elections, Democrats lead Republicans by 12 percentage points.
It should be noted that the midterm elections in the US will be held on November 3, 2026. Members of both houses of Congress will be determined in the elections. The results will determine which party will control the legislative power for the remainder of Donald Trump's presidency.
