Today, June 1 – International Children's Day, celebrated in many countries around the world, is not just a holiday, but also an international day aimed at drawing attention to children's rights, bringing their problems to the agenda, and making a call for the protection of future generations. Against the backdrop of colorful events, concerts, and entertainment, the reason for the creation of this day carries a deeper social meaning.

Modern.az reports that looking back at history, the roots of this day go back to the beginning of the 20th century. The idea of protecting children first began to be widely discussed during international events held in 1925. At that time, the impact of wars, poverty, and social crises on children forced the international community to approach this issue more seriously.

According to one of the versions noted by historians, special events organized for Chinese children living in San Francisco in 1925 also influenced June 1 to later acquire symbolic meaning. However, the international formation of June 1 is more associated with later periods.

In 1949, at a meeting of international women's organizations held in Moscow, the initiative to create a special day dedicated to the protection of children was put forward. Subsequently, from 1950, June 1 began to be celebrated officially and publicly in a number of countries. In subsequent years, June 1 became one of the main platforms for campaigns related to children's rights and social protection.

Why is this day important?

The main reason for the creation of June 1 was to draw attention to the protection of children, who are one of the groups most affected by wars, hunger, poverty, child labor exploitation, and social problems. In subsequent years, children's rights to education, health, safety, and social security became an important part of the international agenda.

The Declaration of the Rights of the Child adopted in 1959, the Convention on the Rights of the Child adopted in 1989, and subsequent international documents are considered turning points in the direction of child protection. Although these documents were not adopted directly on June 1, they had a serious impact on the formation of the philosophy of that day.

How is it celebrated around the world?

In different countries, June 1 is celebrated in various forms. In many post-Soviet countries, including Azerbaijan, concerts, open-air festivals, park events, educational projects, and social actions are held for children.

In some Asian countries, special programs, creative festivals, and holidays for children are announced in schools. In some European countries and the USA, although the focus is more on Universal Children's Day celebrated in November, social campaigns related to children's rights are also organized on June 1.

In recent years, in many countries, this date has become not only a day of entertainment but also a platform for discussing problems such as child abuse, educational inequality, poverty, and digital threats.

The true meaning of this day is to pay attention to children's safety, education, and social protection, more than gifts and entertainment. Because International Children's Day is not just a holiday, but also a reminder for society: the future of children depends on how they are protected today.
