Armenian Foreign Minister Ararat Mirzoyan visited the "Margara" checkpoint on the border with Turkey.
Modern.az reports that the press service of the Armenian Ministry of Foreign Affairs released information about this.
It was stated that Mirzoyan was accompanied by the heads of Armenian diplomatic missions accredited abroad at the checkpoint.
During the visit, Eduard Hakobyan, head of the State Revenue Committee of Armenia, presented the results of the work carried out on the repair and equipment of the checkpoint. He stated that the "Margara" checkpoint is fully ready for operation.
It should be noted that the border has been closed by Ankara since 1993. The tension in relations between the countries has been caused by several factors, including Ankara's support for Azerbaijan's position on the Karabakh issue and Turkey's strong reaction to the process of international recognition of the 1915 events in the Ottoman Empire as the Armenian genocide.
In January 2022, the first meeting of special representatives for the normalization process of Armenia-Turkey relations was held in Moscow. At that time, Ruben Rubinyan, Vice-Speaker of the Armenian Parliament, and Serdar Kılıç, Turkey's former ambassador to the USA, met. Later, a series of meetings were also held in Vienna.
On July 1, 2022, at a meeting between Rubinyan and Kılıç in Vienna, an agreement was reached to create conditions for citizens of third countries, as well as holders of diplomatic passports, to cross the Armenia-Turkey land border. However, this agreement has not yet been implemented.
