US President Donald Trump has stated his readiness to continue supporting Ukraine and increase pressure on Russia.
Modern.az reports that "Politico" published this information, citing informed sources.
At the same time, he put forward the support of European allies for the mine clearance operation in the Strait of Hormuz as an important condition.
According to the publication, Trump voiced this position during closed meetings held within the framework of the G7 summit. Although the leaders of the "Group of Seven" countries expressed their readiness to help ensure security in the Strait of Hormuz, they emphasized that this could be possible under certain conditions.
French President Emmanuel Macron noted that the mine clearance operation can only be carried out based on an official request from the US and with the consent of the parties involved in the process, especially Iran and Oman.
Although a final agreement on the issue has not been reached, German Chancellor Friedrich Merz stated that he was optimistic about the results of the negotiations after his meeting with Trump.
Politico writes that before the summit, European leaders feared that Trump would try to persuade Ukraine to make territorial concessions. These concerns were further strengthened after his recent phone conversation with Russian President Vladimir Putin.
However, the US President unexpectedly announced that harsh sanctions against Russia's oil sector could be reimposed.
"Russia must come to an agreement," Trump emphasized.
At the end of the meeting, G7 leaders adopted a joint statement envisioning increased pressure on Russia. The document notes that additional restrictions against Russia's oil and gas sector will be considered.
In addition, the parties agreed to increase the supply of air defense systems, anti-missile systems, and long-range weapons to Ukraine. The possibilities of issuing licenses for the production of these weapons in Ukraine will also be discussed.
G7 countries also expressed support for taking additional measures to strengthen Ukraine's energy resilience ahead of the upcoming winter season.
The joint statement notes that the agreement reached between the US and Iran regarding keeping the Strait of Hormuz open has created favorable conditions for increasing pressure on Russia's energy sector.
