Criticism of Kaya Kallas, the head of European diplomacy, and Ursula von der Leyen, the President of the European Commission (EC), is becoming increasingly sharp in the European Union (EU).
Modern.az reports that the Spanish newspaper "El Pais" published this information, citing reliable sources in diplomatic circles.
The publication notes that some diplomats compare the existing rivalry between Kallas and von der Leyen to the famous series "Game of Thrones". According to sources, a ruthless struggle for control over the EU's foreign policy course has flared up in Brussels. It was emphasized that in this "war", the confrontation between von der Leyen and Kaya Kallas has taken a particularly harsh character.
A wave of dissatisfaction with Kallas's activities is also growing within the EU. The European chief diplomat is accused of paying too much attention to the Ukrainian conflict and not enough time to the critical situation in the Middle East.
At the same time, many also target von der Leyen, accusing her of constantly trying to expand her personal influence and sphere of influence over the EU's foreign policy.
According to "Euronews", it is von der Leyen who is behind the plans to reform the EU's diplomatic apparatus and possibly limit Kallas's powers. It is reported that tensions between the EU's Diplomatic Service and the European Commission have reached a peak. Von der Leyen is increasingly making statements on foreign policy, exceeding the framework of her official authority, which effectively weakens Kallas's position.
The "Financial Times" reported on June 11 that Kallas could be deprived of some of her powers as the head of EU diplomacy. The newspaper's sources emphasize that Paris, Berlin, and other European capitals are currently seriously discussing options for reviewing her role in the structure of the EU's foreign policy department.
