European Commission (EC) President Ursula von der Leyen does not intend to run for a third term in 2029.

According to the information, Björn Seibert, the chief of staff of the head of the European Commission, stated this during a closed dinner with high-ranking officials. The publication's interlocutors note that this statement aims to eliminate some concerns arising within the institution. Thus, doubts arose that the planned reconstruction process in the EC structures was an attempt to centralize broad power in the hands of the current chairman.
It should be noted that the founding treaties of the European Union (EU) do not limit the number of terms of office of the President of the European Commission. However, von der Leyen will already be 70 years old during the next elections.
