For the first time in Algeria's history, a woman has been elected speaker of the National People's Assembly, the lower house of parliament.

According to the information, Khalida Boufedes was elected chairman of the National People's Assembly in the voting held on July 28, gaining the status of the country's fourth highest official.
Khalida Boufedes, an allergist by profession, represents the province of Algiers, which includes the capital Algiers, in the parliament. She is a member of the pro-government National Liberation Front (FLN), which was one of the main political forces of the country's independence movement.
According to the publication, in the last parliamentary elections, the National Liberation Front won 91 out of 407 seats, gaining the most mandates. Voter turnout in the elections was only 21.24 percent, which is considered the lowest indicator in the history of Algeria.
At the same time, despite the election of a female speaker to the parliament, the representation of women in the legislature remains low. Currently, there are only 25 female deputies in the parliament, which constitutes 6.14 percent of the total number of deputies.
