The gold stored in the Bank of England's underground vaults in London is one of the largest physical reserves in the world, with the exception of the Federal Reserve vaults in New York.
Modern.az reports that there are 12 separate vaults here, storing over 5,000 tons of gold – a large portion of which does not belong to England or the bank itself, but rather constitutes the reserves of central banks from over 60 countries.
The vault is so vast that some tunnels of the London Underground have had to be routed around this underground complex. Each standard gold bar weighs approximately 12–13 kilograms and is marked with a barcode or serial number. Physical transportation is rarely carried out; in most cases, only ownership changes in documents.
Experts believe that, despite political and economic changes, London continues to be the global center for physical gold trading. (Haber7)
