Iran wants the US and Israel to be held accountable for the assassination of the leadership of the Islamic Republic.
Modern.az reports that this was stated to RIA Novosti by Ismail Bagai, an official representative of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Islamic Republic.
“We must do this. I think that not only Iran, but the entire international community demands accountability. Because what the US and Israel have done is a crime against international peace and security. This is a war crime, a crime against humanity,” Bagai said.
According to him, under common Article 1 of the 1949 Geneva Conventions, all states undertake to respect and ensure respect for international humanitarian law.
“Since the atrocities committed by the US and Israel violate these principles, I believe that all UN member states should demand their accountability,” he added.
On February 28, the US and Israel launched a large-scale military operation against Iran. Tel Aviv stated that the purpose of the strikes was to prevent Tehran from acquiring nuclear weapons. Donald Trump, on the other hand, stated his intention to destroy the Iranian navy and defense industry, and also called on the country's citizens to overthrow the regime.
On the night of March 1, Iranian television announced the death of Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. His daughter, son-in-law, grandson, and daughter-in-law were also reportedly killed as a result of the US and Israeli attacks. 175 people were killed in an attack on a school in Minab, southern Iran, most of them students. On March 9, Ayatollah's son Mojtaba Khamenei was elected as the new supreme leader.
Tehran responded by launching attacks on Israeli territory, as well as US military bases in the Middle East.
