The agreement reached with Iran means official Washington's retreat in the face of Tehran's conditions.

Modern.az reports that US Democratic Senator Chris Murphy shared this on the social network X.

“Time will tell whether a final agreement will be signed. But if it does, two truths will be true at the same time: this is effectively a capitulation to Iran. However, we should be happy about this, because as long as this illegal and meaningless war continues, the US becomes weaker. It is a positive thing that this disastrous war is coming to an end, even if the terms of the agreement are humiliating for the US,” Murphy noted.

According to him, the main terms of the agreement were dictated by Iran:

“Iran made only one concession – it kept the Strait of Hormuz open. But this is not really a concession, because the strait was open before the war. Now, after Iran demonstrated that the US cannot prevent it from closing the strait, it has further increased its influence.”

Chris Murphy believes that the unfreezing of Iran's assets effectively means that Washington is paying Tehran in exchange for keeping the Strait of Hormuz open.

The senator also stated that Iran has not undertaken any new commitments regarding its nuclear program. According to him, Tehran's promise not to acquire nuclear weapons cannot be considered a new concession, because this commitment was previously reflected in the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA).

Murphy noted that President Donald Trump's administration failed to achieve any of the goals set during the war.

“Power in Iran is still in the hands of hardliners. They withstood the strongest pressure from the US and showed that they have the ability to close the Strait of Hormuz. Today, Iran is stronger than before the war. The country still has missiles, unmanned aerial vehicles, and a nuclear program,” the senator emphasized.

He also highly estimated the possibility that the final agreement might not be signed at all, stating that in such a case, the US could resume military operations in the near future.

It should be noted that earlier, officials from the US, Iran, and Pakistan, acting as a mediator, confirmed that an agreement had been reached between Washington and Tehran. The agreement is expected to be signed on June 19 in Geneva.

According to Iranian Deputy Foreign Minister Kazem Gharibabadi, the parties will discuss a number of important issues, including Tehran's nuclear program, during a 60-day ceasefire period.
