US President Donald Trump believes that signing a memorandum of understanding with the US is effectively a surrender for Iran.
Modern.az reports that he expressed this opinion in an interview with the “Axios” portal.
“This is, in fact, probably an unconditional surrender. I believe so,” the US leader said. He said this in response to the journalist reminding him that Trump had previously intended to demand “unconditional surrender” from Tehran, but that the signing of the memorandum between the parties did not indicate such an outcome of the conflict.
“We inflicted a complete military defeat on them,” the head of the Washington administration believes. “We have the most powerful armed forces in the world,” he emphasized. “Who else could have built such a blockade? I created a naval blockade [against Iran]. No ship could pass,” Trump said. When asked if he understood the limitations of using force as a result of the conflict, the White House chief replied, “There are no limitations.”
Previously, several American lawmakers from both the Democratic Party and the ruling Republican Party had criticized the Trump administration for military action against Iran and for the terms of the agreements reached with Tehran. In particular, Senator Richard Blumenthal (Democrat, from Connecticut) called the signing of the memorandum a “shameful deal” for the US side. According to him, this “looks like an unconditional surrender, but of the US, not Iran.”
The New York Times also noted that the agreement on the settlement of the conflict between the US and Iran did not resemble the document about Tehran’s “unconditional surrender” that Trump had previously mentioned. According to the publication’s assessment, Iran not only emerged from the confrontation with the US by maintaining its strength, but also obtained favorable terms for itself. These include the restoration of the ability to generate billions of dollars in revenue from oil sales again.
