The United Arab Emirates (UAE) has adopted a decision prohibiting children under 15 from using social networks, for the first time in the Arab world.
Modern.az reports with reference to foreign media that, according to the new rules, persons under the age of 15 will not be allowed to create personal accounts on social networks and use the main functions of the platforms. The ban also covers making posts, writing comments, and participating in open groups. Parental consent will not be considered a basis for removing these restrictions.
For teenagers aged 15-16, access to social networks will not be completely closed, but serious restrictions will be applied. This age group will have a limit on the time they spend in front of the screen, content will be filtered more strictly, communication opportunities with unknown persons will be limited, and parental control will be mandatory.
The new requirements also place serious obligations on social network companies. Platforms will have to implement reliable age verification systems to prevent children from registering. In addition, the use of data of underage users for statistical purposes and targeted advertising will be prohibited.
According to the legislation, social network platforms have been given 12 months to adapt to the new rules. Companies that do not comply with the requirements will be warned, large fines will be imposed, and if necessary, the activities of these platforms may be completely stopped in the country.
