Germany will send 4 Eurofighter jets to Latvia to support the protection of Latvia's airspace.
Modern.az reports that, according to the German Ministry of Defense, the Latvian government has requested additional support from NATO allies amid incidents involving unmanned aerial vehicles in the airspace of the Baltic countries in recent months.
4 Eurofighters belonging to the German Air Force will be deployed at the Lielvarde military airfield in central Latvia from late September to early October.
The dispatch of the fighters to Latvia is intended to support the security of the airspace during the parliamentary elections to be held in the country on October 3. The German contingent will join NATO's enhanced air patrol mission in the region.
Latvia is located near NATO's eastern flank, where Russia is located. The recent entry of several unmanned aerial vehicles into the country's airspace has increased security concerns in NATO countries. In August, NATO fighters shot down an unknown drone that entered Latvian airspace.
Germany also plans to join the NATO air patrol mission in the Baltic region with a larger force at the end of the year. From December 2026 to March 2027, 5 Eurofighters and military personnel are planned to be deployed at the Ämari airbase in Estonia.
