Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan said that Ankara and Washington are working on "creative ideas" that could allow the lifting of US sanctions imposed on Turkey due to the S-400 anti-aircraft missile systems purchased from Russia.
Modern.az reports that Fidan spoke about this in an interview with "NTV" television channel.
The minister did not disclose the content of the proposals being discussed, but expressed hope that positive steps would be taken on the issue.
In 2020, the US imposed sanctions against Ankara under the CAATSA law due to Turkey's acquisition of S-400 systems from Russia. In addition, Washington removed Turkey from the F-35 fighter jet production program.
The acquisition of Russian air defense systems has become one of the most serious disagreements between NATO ally Turkey and the United States. The US stated that the operation of S-400 systems is incompatible with Turkey's participation in the F-35 program and poses a risk to NATO's security.
In July, Turkish media reported that one of the possible solutions to the problem could be for Ankara to resell the S-400 systems to one of the Persian Gulf countries. It was assumed that such a step could pave the way for Turkey to acquire US-made F-35 fighter jets.
Russia announced at the time that it supported contacts with Turkey on this issue.
Fidan, however, did not clarify in his interview with "NTV" whether the "creative ideas" currently being discussed between Ankara and Washington are related to the possible resale of S-400 systems.
